Labor Day Celebrated in Michigan
Date Posted: September 9 2016
FROM
MARQUETTE to Monroe, Muskegon to
Mackinac City, labor union members, family, friends and supporters took part in
Labor Day parades and festivities around Michigan. Former President Bill
Clinton attended the Detroit parade in support of his candidate-wife, Hillary.
The founder of the Labor Day holiday, carpenter Peter McGuire, suggested that
the day “first be celebrated by a street parade, which would publicly show the
strength and esprit du corps of the trade and labor organizations. Next the
parade should be followed by a picnic or a festival in some grove....” Done and
done!
